Well DONE LAKERS! Race Recaps + Reminder to Sign up for Sugar Bowl AND HEAVENLY NIGHT RACE
2.1.24: Race Recap: What a showing this week, both at Kirkwood for the GS and at Diamond Peak for the slalom! Way to go! Not only did we have a full roster, we dominated the top ten, taking the win for NTHS on both days.
For the girls, at Diamond Peak, can you say 1 through 6? Wow amazing girls! That is some kind of record. And earlier in the week at Kirkwood, 2nd-3rd-5th and 7th. Excellent results!
And for the boys, a 1st through 6th sweep again at Kirkwood, plus 1-5 B team, most of which should have been A team if we could have seeded you this way.* Diamond Peak 1-2-4-5-7- and 9, plus 1st though 7th for B team.... WHAAAAATTTT so impressive! We are in awe of the talent our team possesses.
We also were treated to a superstar forerunner at Diamond Peak. 2023 US Slalom Champion Lila Lapanja's hometown ski area is Diamond Peak, and she ripped it even though she was on GS skis!
*Note about seeding (for boys) - We know this has been frustrating. We do our best but if you are a late entry there isn't much we can do about it. Also, we can only seed 8 for A Team.
Sign up for Sugar Bowl by Monday
We need to know who wants to race in the Wednesday Feb. 7 race at Sugar Bowl by Monday, 2/5. See race details here and RSVP here. NOTE: Sugar Bowl will not allow any late entries! We will not be able to enter anyone after Monday 6pm. Please sign up early! We want to make sure that everyone who wants to race, can race.
Heavenly Night Race - Friday, Feb. 9
This year they brought back the Heavenly night race, which we've only done once before. It's a super fun event with bleachers at the bottom for parents and spectators, an announcer, and music. We don't have all the race info yet (price, etc.) but need to know if you are interested. We will be taking two vans, first come first served for the first 14 racers who need a ride. RSVP here.
Training at Alpine on Tuesday - weather permitting
Slalom on Tuesday at Alpine Meadows. Meet at the top of Kangaroo any time after 1:30pm. Watch your emails and this website for updates... if weather is an issue, we may have to cancel.
Requirements for States - PLEASE READ
There are only two races left in the regular season. Please remember that you need to have 3 race starts to qualify for States. That means, if you only have one start so far, you must race in the next 2 races.
State Championships
We know that many of you have conflicts for our State Championships, which are scheduled for February 13-14 at Diamond Peak. If you can make it to either day, please let us know. RSVP forms for both will be available soon. You can sign up for just one race, or both if that works for you. We can take 10 boys and 10 girls.
Western Regional High School Championships
This is an amazing event, held every year with high schools from all over the Western US. They will be held at Mammoth, on March 12-13-14. Qualifications are not as strict as State Championships and solely up to coaches discretion. If you are interested and can participate those dates, we would like to know! We also need to make sure you are a member of USSS. Email Coach Gretchen for more info.

Congrats to Addison Jones - winner of the Shreve Perpetual trophy award with her first place finish at Sierra-at-Tahoe!
We had a grand total of one racer for the Sierra-at-Tahoe race, Addison Jones. She had a good reason to go even though she was the only one: she won the race last year and wanted to do it again!
Quick note about this race: I’d like to call your attention to something pretty cool. The former director of the Tahoe Basin Ski League (TBSL), Mike Shreve, who is from South Shore, lost his son at an early age and, years ago, designated this Sierra-at-Tahoe high school race as a memorial to his son Ryan Shreve. There is a perpetual trophy dating back to 2004. Many NTHS racers have their names engraved on this trophy! Photo below shows Mr. Shreve awarding the trophy to Addison and STHS boy winner.

We are so proud that not only did another North Tahoe racer top the podium at the Ryan Shreve Memorial, but that Addison won two years in a row. We’re honored that our athletes are contributing to this special tradition.

RACE RECAP - GS at Alpine, Jan. 17
1.17.24: We battled wind, snow and fog today, as well as some seriously challenging snow and course conditions. With all that stacked against us we still had a great day!
Well, most of us did.... good thoughts and healing vibes go out to Bree Brandreth who had a run-in with the second to last gate on the second run. She had to get some stitches in her lip, but was a trooper and had a great attitude through it all. Hang in there Bree!
Even without Bree as one of the top finishers, the girls had a great 2nd place finish (barely getting beat out by Truckee girls by only 2 points!), great job girls! And the boys turned in an impressive result, getting the top two spots, plus 6th, 8th, and 10th. Five in the top ten, very well done boys! And thank you to all our Lakers who came out today, it was not an easy first race.
Many thanks go out to our parents who helped out today: Lisa Van Prooyen, Stefanie Mechejda, Eileen Alano, and Matt Michael. Way to represent!
I also want to give a shout out to the Alpine race crew, truly a class act with their course maintenance on a very challenging day. If you see them out on the mountain be sure to thank them for a job well done.
I don't have team results yet - will post here when I get them - but I believe we took the W for the day - a great way to start our (delayed) season. Good job everyone!

TRAINING AND RACING SCHEDULE - Week of Jan. 8
1.7.24: Welcome back to school and our NTHS Ski Team ski season! We have heard from Kirkwood and the race scheduled for Wednesday is ON. We know there is weather coming in, so we will have to watch the storm pattern - please watch your emails and our website should we have any last minute changes.
CAN YOU RACE? Please RSVP at the >>> Race Signup Page.
SIGN LIABILITY RELEASE: On the >>> Forms Page.
TRANSPORTATION PROVIDED: See all details on >>> Race Day Updates Page.
TRAINING: Scheduled for Tuesday, starting at 1:30pm. Sorry to say, Alpine will not let us set a course yet. So, we are planning on freeskiing and drills - meet at 1:30 at the fireplace upstairs in the Alpine Lodge. We may take the Base to Base to Palisades, so if you come later than 1:30, text Coach Gretchen at 530-386-0701 and we can meet up.
SWAG: We still have flannels and sweatshirts, see below and text or email coaches to let us know if you want. We can bring to the races and you can Venmo or Zelle us. Email Coach Gretchen at [email protected] to order.

Dec. 21 Race cancelled
12.18.23: We just got word our next race is cancelled. So saddddddd, but not a surprise, since it's pouring rain and pretty dismal outside... where is the snow!!! Most likely our freeskiing day tomorrow/Tuesday will not happen either - we will make the call in the morning. If so, that means we will not meet up again until after the holiday break.
At this point, races will not be made up, so our season just shrunk down to 5 total races, as long as we have no more cancellations. We will keep you posted after break, if we end up trying to reschedule.
TEAM CAPTAINS
While on vacation, I'm giving out some homework! We need team captains. For those of you who are interested, please send an email to [email protected] telling us why you'd like to be captain and how you can help. We would love to get a Facebook and/or Instagram page set up, so this is something we would like captains to do, in addition to helping out with communication and race-day organization. It's fun and looks great on college applications. :)

FIRST RACE CANCELLED
12.11.23: What a difference a year makes, huh? We are sorry to report that the first race has been cancelled by Alpine's Race Department due to conditions. According to Alpine, "the storm delivered more than expected, but unfortunately it's not enough to get Kangaroo or Exhibition ready for the race this week."
The league will not reschedule the race, so we now have 6 races on the schedule. Per league bylaws, racers must still race three races to be eligible for State Championships, so nothing here has changed.
We are still on for freesking tomorrow, Tuesday Dec. 12. (Text Gretchen at 530-386-0701 if you need a ticket for the day). The next race is scheduled for next week at Alpine on Thursday Dec. 21. Fingers crossed!
Parents: we are looking for volunteers for the home race on Dec. 21. I have one signup so far. Please let me know if you can help - we need 3-4 total. We also need a parent who can help out the Boosters Club. It's a bit more of a commitment but they would like at least one from every team. Gretchen can provide more info if you are interested and willing! THANK YOU!

WElcome to the 2023-2024 season!
12.3.23: Welcome everyone! We are SO looking forward to this upcoming ski season with you all. Unfortunately, Mother Nature hasn't provided snow like she did last year (yet), so we are a bit up in the air for our early season training and racing. Our first race is supposed to happen on Dec. 14 BUT we are of course at the mercy of snowfall and conditions. Heads up: NTHS hosts this first race so we will be looking for parent volunteers to come out to be gatekeepers - we usually need 5-6 people. Thanks in advance.
1st Day of Training/Freeskiing Dec 7: Alpine Meadows is not even making snow on Kangaroo, which doesn't bode well for our first race, but definitely affects our ability to train gates. Instead, those who want to, can meet to go out and make some turns with Coach Gretchen. We may jump on the Base to Base so I'll need and RSVP so I know I'm not leaving anyone behind. Please text Gretchen at 530-386-0701 if you need a ticket for the day.
Remember, before you can train you must complete the Release of Liability for Palisades Tahoe, see the >>>Forms page. *If you have and Ikon Pass, you are good to go.
Time Trials: While we like to do time trials before the first race, it's not looking good at the moment. We will keep you posted.
For the latest updates, see the >>>Schedule page. Note, our time trials are mandatory, so please plan accordingly.
First Race, Thursday, Dec. 14: The >>>Race Signup page has been updated, so you can now sign up. For those of you who are new to the team, if you would like to race, you need to RSVP on this page; please pay attention to the deadlines to sign up - usually by 6pm the day before the race, but may differ with different ski areas. Coaches will compile the roster of racers and determine the start list according to time trials, past results, and coaches' discretion. We can take 8 boys and 8 girls on the A team. After the top 8, we can typically field as many racers as we want for the B team, so everyone who wants to race, usually can race.
Our A and B teams are not fixed; they will change each race depending on who RSVPs to race. This means that some of you may race B team one race and A team another and then maybe B team again. Reminder, it is based on prior results and coaches' discretion. Seeding racers is not our most favorite part of our job; especially since the Kangaroo Race Run at Alpine is a short course with a gentle slope, which tends to make for tight results that could be very different on a more challenging course. Hang in there with us as we sort it out early season.
Please note, for both training and racing at Alpine, there is no transportation provided, so you will need to find your own way to the race. You will meet us in the lodge the morning of the race (see >>>Race Day Updates so you know where to meet etc.)

If the district is providing transportation to a race - usually either a bus, or district vans driven by coaches - then the following rules will apply:
- If a student athlete has their license and wants to drive, we will need a letter of permission signed by a parent. Student athlete can then drive only themselves and NO OTHER ATHLETES. See letter on the >>>Forms page, scroll down to blue box at bottom of page.
- If a parent wants to drive their own child to the race, they may do so, but cannot drive any other athletes, even if the other parents have given permission. UNLESS...
- If a parent wants to drive more athletes than their own child/children, they may sign on as an "Unsupervised Volunteer" and go through the process required by TTUSD. See links and more information on the >>>Forms page, scroll down to the blue box at the bottom of the page.
